Taming the Ego

We hear much talk about "getting rid of the ego" as a requirement of spiritual progress. What exactly does it mean and how can it be accomplished?

Let us first think about what the ego is. There are several meanings to this word. One is the sense of personal identity, or a sense of individuality that differentiates us from all other beings. "Ego" can also mean a sense of self-importance. We live in two worlds at the same time: the physical world and the world of spirit. If we did not have an ego, we would not be able to care for the physical part of our being, so it is evident that it would not be in our interest to get rid of this part of us. What the spiritual masters refer to is the second part of the definition, or the sense of self-importance that we must overcome.

The term "taming" the ego seems more appropriate than "getting rid of" it, because there is really no way of "getting rid of" something that is built into our nature. At the end of the day, we still need to eat, sleep, and do other worldly things while we inhabit our body. We must train our ego, much like training an unruly child. And like an unruly child, it is not going to want to be trained, and that is the big challenge.

According to ancient yogic teachings, here are some suggestions on how to train the ego.

1) Understand how the mind works
Realize that it is the egoic mind that creates desires and false beliefs, that you are a slave to the mind, and that it is the mind that causes all of your suffering. To be liberated is to become free of the influences of the mind and to surrender to a Higher Reality.

2) Become an observer
Observe yourself constantly and acknowledge your weaknesses. Be completely honest to yourself, even though this may be painful at times. If you mishandle a situation in your daily life, ask yourself why you mishandled it and how you may handle it better if the same type of situation arose in the future.

3) Make a commitment to change
Use your power of discrimination to become your own guide. Have courage and determination. Surround yourself with higher beings and good company while avoiding bad company. Attend group sessions, read good books, or work with a teacher who can keep you motivated and on the correct path.

4) Meditate
Meditation allows you to purify the mind and come in touch with a Higher Reality. Learn one-pointed concentration and how to turn your attention inwards. Start with short sessions, perhaps even 5 minute sessions, and increase the time. Try to meditate at least 30 minutes to an hour per day.

The path is not easy, but many have walked it before you and succeeded. Never give up!
